The American Hut

The American Hut serves as a powerful symbol of the shifting tides within our society. It asks: Who truly belongs? Why has immigration become a point of contention? Who decides who is ‘worthy’ of inclusion in an exclusive society?
This piece challenges the illusion of progress—are we not witnessing a return to systems of control, where people are commodified, assigned value, and bought and sold? It reflects the inversion of the ideals we claim to uphold, exposing a deeper truth about who holds space in this country.
Through a blend of fashion, service work, historical references, personal emotions, and sharp questions, The American Hut becomes a mirror—one that reflects the often-overlooked stories of those who have built and shaped this land. The piece is made from carefully selected cutouts from magazines, where I chose fashion, quotes, and imagery that spoke to these themes. Each element was intentionally picked to express how identity, culture, and worth are constructed and often constrained by society.
Poster Presentation: Wednesday, April 23, 1:30 – 3 p.m.
