The Dignity of Desire: Searching for the Place of Eros in Christian Theology
Ana Botleho ’23, Theology and Philosophy major
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Michael Wahl, Theology

This research expands upon the work started by Pope Benedict XVI to search for the place of eros in contemporary Christian theology and craft a more extensive response to the Nietzschean charge that Christianity poisoned eros. This project examines historical definitions of eros in order to recover and propose an unreduced conception of eros that avoids subordinating it to agape, and on the other hand avoids separating it from or reducing it to sexual desire. It also examines the ways in which this concept of eros could be expanded upon and applied to contemporary cultural problems.
