My Journey in Becoming Culturally Competent
Olivia G. Phelps ’26, Psychology major
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Comfort Ateh, Secondary Education
Through the urban education course (EDU 211) in the spring semester of 2023, I engaged in learning and understanding the importance of cultural competence in interacting with others who are different from me. I examined my K-12 experience based on the characteristics of a typical inner city school that serves mostly minority students. I now appreciate the challenges that inner city students face in schools and the need for teachers to be culturally competent in meeting the learning needs of these students.
