Impact
The Center for Engaged Learning is pleased to announce IMPACT, a new program to support student-designed, high-impact experiences.
During this pilot phase, IMPACT will not replace existing mechanisms of support (e.g., Undergraduate Research and Creative Grants; Feinstein Community Fellowships; Fr. Smith Fellowships, funded internships). Students who propose projects appropriate for those mechanisms should apply to those programs, not to IMPACT.
IMPACT grants are designed to support student projects that do not fit neatly into an existing structure. They are particularly appropriate for projects which bridge co-curricular and curricular learning and/or experiences.
Review Criteria
Applications will be reviewed by a small committee of PC faculty, staff, and administrators. Efforts will be made to recruit at least one reviewer with expertise on each project’s topic or method. Applications will be rated on 1) feasibility; 2) quality; and 3) the degree to which the project fulfills the objectives of the IMPACT program.
The objective of the IMPACT program is to provide opportunities for students to:
- Integrate two or more domains of knowledge (e.g., courses in student’s major and Core courses; coursework and co-curricular activities)
- Gain new knowledge or skills on a topic which is personally meaningful to the student(s) or relevant to the students’ intended post-graduate path
- Share their learning through some sort of public product (e.g., presentation, event, publication)
Guidelines and Eligibility Criteria
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior status required.
- Students may apply individually or in groups.
- Students may only receive one IMPACT grant during their time at Providence College.
- Grants are for the academic year. All funds must be spent by June 15th, 2025.
- Projects must be mentored by at least one full-time faculty or staff member. Co-mentors are allowed and encouraged if appropriate for the project.
- Applications must be generated by students, and awards are made to students, not faculty or staff.
Funding
- Students can apply for up to $3000 of funding. Larger grants will be considered for group projects if there is adequate justification.
- Funding can be used for supplies, travel, and equipment. (Note that any equipment purchased must be returned to the College when the project is completed).
- Funding cannot be used to pay stipends or wages.
- Funding cannot be used for study abroad costs.
Requirements
- At the close of the project, a final report must be submitted to the CEL. Final reports will include a summary of activities and include evidence of what students learned.
- All projects must result in some sort of public product (e.g., final presentation, publication, community event, etc.)
Applications
- Applications will be accepted and considered on a rolling basis while funding is available.
- To apply, students must submit: a project narrative, a project budget, and mentor endorsement(s). Project narratives must describe the project’s motivation and goals, how it fulfills the IMPACT program’s objectives, and an anticipated timeline.
- Email complete applications to cel@providence.edu.
