Song Catalog Investments and the Future of the Music Industry
Kieran Kraus ’23, Finance and Marketing major
Faculty Mentor: Professor Paul Scanlon, Finance
Over the course of the past two years I have done significant research into the music industry and the market of Song Catalogs where artists can trade their future royalties cash flows for their present value.
For my research, I am using PowerBI to take a closer look at Royalty data to gain a better understanding of the best way to predict future cash flows. By including different factors of the music industry and financial markets, I can model future cash flows and determine the profitability of the Song Catalog. By combining statistical and financial analysis, I will better evaluate the profitability of both long-term ownership and short-term speculation of Song Catalogs.
In the spring of 2023, I will be conducting an Independent Study on this topic and will be diving deeper into more hypotheses for research and analysis.
