In the Gospel of John, Jesus’s interlocutors ask him a critical question about his identity: “Who are you?” (John 8:25). Echoing this question, this project seeks to provide critical answers by examining identity-revealing pericopes in John’s Gospel and gleaning insights from its patristic, medieval, and modern exegetes. Through distinct yet complementary lenses, the two student researchers are setting their eyes on (1) the self-expression of Jesus as God and (2) the self-limitation of Jesus as human. Looking at him through these hermeneutical foci, this investigation expands and deepens our scholarly knowledge of Jesus Christ, the “God” made “flesh” (John 1:1,14).
