Rumer Godden’s writings span the trajectory of nearly 83 years and sixty novels, many of which have become major motion pictures and graced the stage. Despite Godden’s literary prowess, her name has fallen to a hush among literary circles.
Perhaps the reason for Godden’s vanishment from public canon is a result of Godden’s use of religious sisters as principal characters in her most renowned novels, her bold conversion to Catholicism in a country where it was frowned upon, or perhaps it was Godden’s blunt attention to the human condition that abrasively struck audiences and therefore removed Godden from literary canon.
