“Gli Scheletri della Dittatura”: Fascist Art, Architecture, and Monuments in Modern Italy
John Moore ’25, History major
Faculty mentor: Dr. Jennifer Illuzzi, History and Classics

When Italy was reconstituted as a Republic in 1946, it inherited countless monuments, buildings, and art pieces from the Fascist era. Despite the inherent Fascist symbolism and style of many such artifacts, the Italian government has yet to enact a uniform policy towards handling them. Most studies have examined a singular Italian city, primarily Rome, to suggest why the artifacts have often remained in place. Contrarily, this thesis compares the treatment of Fascist monuments in the capital to that in Predappio and Bolzano, exploring the different ways in which Italian municipalities have confronted their problematic inheritance.
