This project further explores Father John LaFarge S.J., the most prominent Catholic civil rights activist in the early 20th century. He challenged the racist attitudes and practices of American Catholics and Americans at large. At the same time, he also challenged secularism. LaFarge envisioned an interracial society led by Catholic social teachings. This project will examine his methods to promote this vision looking closely at his relationships with black leaders, his attitude toward Judaism, and his passion against Communism.
